Lisa M. Nelson, Au.D., Founder & Owner

History of Professionalism

Early in her career, Dr. Nelson had the opportunity to work in a variety of clinic settings (hospital, ENT office, and other Audiology private practices). In 1995, she founded Hearing Professionals so that she could define the level of care that patients receive and ensure that the equipment is state of the art. The practice has grown rapidly from one office in Laurel, to providing full diagnostic and rehabilitative services in Laurel, Bowie, Waldorf and California, Maryland.

Dr. Nelson is fluent in sign language communication and has extensive experience with advanced hearing aid technology. Dr. Nelson was a national speaker-trainer, teaching digital hearing aid fitting techniques, for 8 years. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Doctors of Audiology, American Academy of Audiology, and served as President of the Maryland Academy of Audiology in 1995.

In 2007, Dr. Nelson was appointed by the Governor of Maryland to the Board of examiners for Audiologists, Speech and Language Pathologists and Hearing Aid Dispensers and was reappointed for another 4-year term in 2011.

Education is Key

Audiology is the Science of Hearing and Balance with the unique training to non-surgically remediate patients’ issues. A deeply rooted fascination in American Sign Language ultimately introduced Dr. Nelson to the profession of Audiology. This definition sparked her curiosity and has led to a rewarding career in Audiology.

Dr. Lisa Nelson received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1987 from The University of Maryland, College Park, and received her Master’s of Science degree in 1989 from Gallaudet University, Washington D.C. In 2001, Dr. Nelson received her Doctor of Audiology degree from The University of Arizona School of Health Sciences.
