About Us

Audiology is the branch of science that studies hearing, balance, and their disorders. A doctor of Audiology, Au.D. or a Doctor of Philosophy in Audiology, Ph.D., is specifically trained to identify, diagnose, rehabilitate and monitor disorders of the hearing and balance system. We assess your entire auditory or vestibular system and then recommend a solution to treat your symptom.

HPI Mission Statement
To provide the highest quality of personalized and professional diagnostic and rehabilitative balance and hearing health care services, to maximize each individual patient’s quality of life.

We will accomplish this by:

  • Treating each patient like family, taking the time to truly understand their needs and concerns.
  • Providing the most advanced technology, diagnostic and rehabilitative services appropriate for each individual patient.
  • Providing flexible office hours to accommodate each patient’s needs.
  • Scheduling urgent appointments to be seen within 1 to 2 business days.
  • Providing excellent patient care, with a teamwork approach will result in a successful and rewarding environment for all involved.

Our History
Hearing Professionals (HPI) began in 1995 after the Director, Dr. Lisa Nelson, had been providing services for more than 5 years at other practices. During this time, Dr. Nelson came to believe that personalized care should be the ultimate goal of an audiology practice. She also believed that using the most technologically advanced equipment should be standard care.

To achieve her vision and provide an advanced level of care, Dr. Nelson started HPI in Laurel, Maryland. In 1999 HPI expanded the service area by acquiring Waldorf Hearing Aid Center. Then, in 2001 HPI expanded once again and began providing services in Bowie and also in 2001 established satellite offices providing services part-time in Solomons and Leonardtown. The service area now covers most of Maryland’s southern counties west of the Chesapeake Bay.

The company has grown from a single employee with a vision of more personalized hearing healthcare to a team of 12 employees. The reputation of the practice draws patients from more than 7 counties in Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

All of our audiologists are clinically trained to diagnose, evaluate and recommend a treatment plan for your hearing and balance system needs. At a minimum, our audiologists hold a Masters Degree in Audiology, although most of our Audiologists hold a doctorate, Au.D., or Doctor of Audiology.
